Well, my rear driver’s side somehow had a literal chunk of tire gashed out. The tires it is currently sitting on are backordered at Continental with no estimated ETA..so probably a long fucking time. So my question is, what does oppo recommend as a replacement?
The specific tires they’re on right now are the ExtremeContact DWS 06, sizing is 275/35/18 95y.
The guy at the local tire shop is recommending the Contact Sport All Season:
These two tires are supposed to be the same size, but the contact sport appear to not be as wide at the DWS 06. Could that just be the stock photo?
Regardless, if it’s a different tire I’ll need to replace all four..hooray. So if that’s the case I ask Oppo, which tires do you recommend?
Other Details:
-This is my daily driver
-I live in Phoenix, AZ so it’ll be a year round tire
-18" wheel size, as stated earlier
Tunes for your time:

Hmm Tirerack says 1/30 availability for the DWS06. How worn are your tires? Replacing just the one, or the full set?
I’m happy with my Pilot Sport A/S 3 + tires, but have no experience with either of the Continentals for comparison.

Why not go with one of their summer performance tires, in lieu of the all season? The DWS are nice for a place that gets just a little snow, but if you’re not worried about the white stuff, just go for a summer tire. Conti has a good comparable tire to the pilots. Or go with the pilot sport AS if you need an all season. Those are my two go tos. The conti extreme something summer tire or the michilen pilots.

Discount Tire? And
how old are the tires you have on now?
That ControlContact is a DT/DTD-exclusive private-label version of the DWS
Why are you using all-season tires in Phoenix? Does it ever get cold there?

If you live in Phoenix why are you looking at all-season tires? All but the most extreme summer tires work in the rain. All-season tires add snow capability (at least in theory).
In that size, check out the General G-Max RS, Falken Azenis FK510, and Firestone Firehawk Indy 500. Don’t get the Kumo PS91, it’s hot garbage.
I had a set of PS91s on my 335xi and they were shite. I replaced them with Indy 500s. This was right before the other 2 tires I mentioned came out and both of them have better wet traction and comfort than the Indy 500s but less dry traction.
Here, read this .

I like the Mic helin Pilot Sport AS 3+ on my M5. But what I should have gotten are Firestone Finehaw ks.
I love the Pilot Sports, but the Firehawks are cheaper and are pure summer tires, so more fun.

I’d just get the cheapest all-seasons you can find that fit. Well, that’s what I would do at least. You should do something different.

where did it say specific date? when I type my zip code in (85027) all it tells me is backorder, ETA unscheduled.
but if I can find one that’s all i’m gonna change. they only have maybe 20k miles on them currently

Phoe nix? Clearly you need Bridgstone blizzak WS80's.
I like the BFG Comp 2 in the summer trim, not the all season, no reason for all seasons in Phoenix.

yup first call was discount, I figured get has to have it but no luck.
it does get pretty cold here, just above freezing in the middle of winter. I also will visit flagstaff and they get a couple feet of snow annually as well.
I’ll definitely check out what you recommend. I’ve been meaning to check out other brands, this is a good excuse.

Bridgestone RE980 AS appears to be better on paper than the Continental, I actually have a set of 4 on order.

I will make the occasional trip to flagstaff during winter and they get a good couple feet for about a five month period.
I appreciate that link though, it helps narrow down the thousands of types quite easily and in layman’s terms for my ass.

ok
I was hoping to find one of those 3-peak all-season tires, but they don’t seem to be made in the size you need.
For an all-season tire, the Falken Ziex ZE950 seems like a good choice. I actually have these on my car, albeit in a more-normal size
The Yokohama Advan Sport AS might also work for you.

Looks like this for me:
Availability is right below the per tire price.
Here’s a search that should return it: https://www.tirerack.com/tires/TireSearchResults.jsp?zip-code=77025&width=275/&ratio=35&diameter=18

I’ve had the Michelin Pilot Sports A/S , the MXM4s and that Conti DWS. The turn in was better on the Pilots than the Conti, but I think the Contis were a smidge better in the snow. The Primacy MXM4s are more similar to that Contact Sport - quieter ride but not quite as sporty. My local Discount shop up here shows just a 2 day wait for the Conti DWS, but if you can’t get those I’ll bet you’d be very happy with the Pilot A/S.

Another vote for the Pilot Sport A/S3+ here. I had/have a set o n my Golf/WRX for 3/4 of the year here in southern Ontario, Canada and will most likely put a set on my 128i when I replace whatever is on there now.

I like the all season for those quick trips up the mountain to flagstaff, so I do ocassionaly drive in snow but less than a week or so a year.
Oppos seem to love the pilot sport, i’ll have to check them out

this seems to be the favored opinion. with the amount of responses with the pilot sport it seems like it’ll for sure be the next set

that will leave me with more money to put into the car, the circle of life.
but in all seriousness, i’ll have to give these a good look. with your experience with the pilot sport but still recommending the firehawks and what not.

you know I was between the blizzaks or pilot alpin, this was the answer I was looking for.
but as for the all season , I do head up to flagstaff on occasion where will be in the ground for 5 months out of the year. albeit it’s only a week or two at the most in the snow, but something capable when I am there would be cool.

i’m totally getting shafted here in the southwest apparently. I called tire rack and the guy told me about 2-3 weeks is the earliest I could get it. I’ll have to go hunting into some more local spots.
but with the consensus recommending pilots, that’ll most likely be the choice.

You can't go wrong with the Pilot Sports. The Firhawks are something that was recommended to me by multiple people. I still had to drive the car in rain and cold weather, that's why I picked them.

I’m just realizing there’s another topaz blue bmw wagon on oppo... although I scrolled back and found out why (I think) the front of your car looks darker, due to the replacement of those panels by the PO?
Anyway, great car. I’ve learned a lot wrenching on mine (E46) and they’re not bad to work on if you have the space.
I can’t remember the last topaz blue wagon I saw in the real world. Actually maybe it was the one I used to see around my town about 2 years ago, ha. Hmmm

you are correct sir! nice eye.
i’m the third owner, the original owner managed to wedge the car between a truck and a guardrail back in 2015, completely shredding both front quarter panels and both from doors. insurance salvaged it since by then OEM replacements were more than the value of the car and PO bought it at auction and could only replace the parts with avus blue pieces.
I’m trying to get it completely sorted mechanically before moving on to the body and a repaint. just few more things left and I should be good to go by this time next year!
and you’re exactly right, they are pretty straight forward to work on, especially with help from the bentley manual. ze germans really know how to build an in-line engine.
you’re on the east coast, correct? the original owner bought and drove this in Washington. that would have made for quite a story!

I am on the east coast. The history of my car is a bit more complex. If I remember right, it was in Jersey for a long time. Probably garage kept in a nice little suburb - all dealer service. Then it went to Mass. (new owner)
but not long. Then New Orleans for a while, still same owner.
Then back to Mass (third owner)
where it spent only a few months, and I think that owner spent a ton on maintenance (I do have some evidence), figured “old BMWs are terrible” and traded it for a new Camry, whereupon a shop I know and love bought it at auction. They fixed yet more stuff ($3k worth) and sold it to me for still well under $10k at the time (2014). It’s been fantastic to me, of course. 175k last week.
In contrast to you, I wasn’t actively looking at the time, I had a 2001 with around 200k on it - otherwise basically the same car. This appeared on the website of my local shop though, and before pics were even posted I
agreed to buy it. Sold my ‘01 on Craigslist but for a brief, glorious period I had both in my driveway.

what a journey to make it to you.
they are fantastic cars and i’m glad to know people like yourself are keeping these going. I just can’t seem to find a more beautiful car than these wagons.
I always find myself checking CL for them, although I would hav eno discernible use for a second wagon, I just wanna buy all the odd color beemer wagons I come across.

They are good, I hope I can keep mine alive a while longer. It helps we have two other cars, so it doesn’t get driven every day, although it is my go-to winter car unfortunately for salt reasons.
There’s been a Dakar yellow one floating around NH for years now, I keep seeing it come up from time to time, and somehow always around NH. There was a red one on BaT recently that sold for good money, even at around 100k miles - I think nearly $8k?
